FASTag Update: 5 Key Things to Know About the Upcoming Toll Policy

The Central Government is planning a major revamp of India’s toll collection system, aiming to make highway travel more seamless and cost-effective. Under the proposed FASTag policy, commuters can expect simplified toll payments, faster travel, and improved infrastructure efficiency.

Here are five key highlights you need to know:

  1. Annual Pass for Unlimited Travel
A major feature of the proposed policy is the introduction of an Annual Toll Pass. For a flat fee of ₹3,000 per year, vehicle owners will be allowed unlimited travel across all national highways, expressways, and state expressways. This move aims to reduce the hassle of frequent FASTag recharges and offer a cost-effective option for regular travelers.
  2. Two Payment Options: Choose What Suits You
Commuters will soon be able to choose between two toll payment models:
FASTag Update: 5 Key Things to Know About the Upcoming Toll Policy

This flexible approach allows travelers to pick the option best suited to their travel frequency.

  1. No New FASTag Required Seamless Transition
There’s no need to worry about new registrations or documents. Existing FASTag accounts will remain valid, and users can simply opt into the new system through their current accounts. Additionally, the government has scrapped the earlier proposal for a ₹30,000 lifetime FASTag, making the new system more affordable and accessible.
  2. Say Goodbye to Toll Barriers: Sensor-Based System Ahead
The government is moving towards barrier-free tolling by phasing out physical toll booths and implementing sensor-based systems. This change will significantly reduce congestion, minimize fuel consumption, and enhance the overall driving experience.

To ensure smooth adoption, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) will create a compensation mechanism for private toll operators who may see reduced revenues due to the new system.

  1. Smarter Enforcement and Anti-Evasion Measures
To prevent toll evasion, banks will be empowered with tools to enforce toll payments, including the ability to maintain minimum FASTag balances. With advanced digital monitoring, the system is designed to be both efficient and secure.

What’s Next?
While the policy is still under review, its implementation is expected to revolutionize highway travel in India. Once rolled out, this system will provide a user-friendly, transparent, and fast toll experience for millions of commuters across the country.
