Recent reports indicate that Russia and India are discussing a bilateral agreement to streamline travel between the two nations. Scheduled to commence in June, these talks signify a significant stride in bolstering tourism ties between Moscow and New Delhi, with plans to introduce visa-free group tourist exchanges.
Nikita Kondratyev, Director of the Russian Economic Development Ministry’s Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation and Special Projects, emphasized India’s progress in internal state coordination, affirming its preparedness for the forthcoming agreement. Speaking at the International Economic Forum “Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum 2024″ in Kazan, the Minister disclosed that they are currently deliberating the timeline, with expectations that the agreement will be signed by year-end following the initial discussions in June. The primary aim is to enhance tourism by facilitating visa-free group tourist exchanges, thereby fostering cultural and economic bonds between the two countries.
Kondratyev underscored that the objective of this initiative is to replicate the success of visa-free tourist exchanges already in place with China and Iran. Notably, Russia and China launched their visa-free group tourist exchange on August 1 of the preceding year, followed by a similar initiative with Iran on the same date.
Reflecting on recent tourism trends, the Russian capital witnessed a significant influx of business tourists in 2023, totaling 3.7 million, marking a 7% increase from the previous year. India emerged as a notable contributor among non-CIS countries to this surge in business travel. Moreover, statistics reveal a noteworthy uptick in Indian visitors to Moscow, with 60,000 recorded in 2023, a quarter more than the preceding year. This rise is mirrored by a corresponding surge in Russian tourists exploring India, highlighting the reciprocal nature of tourism between the two nations.
