Final Survey Approved for Melli to Dentam Line

In a major boost to Sikkim’s transportation network, the Ministry of Railways has approved the final location survey for a proposed railway line from Melli to Dentam, aimed at improving rail connectivity in the state’s southern and western regions. The survey, to be executed by the Northeast Frontier Railway, has been sanctioned at a cost of INR 2.25 crore.

Planned Route and Strategic Importance
The proposed route will pass through Jorethang and Legship, ultimately connecting the remote town of Dentam, situated near the India-Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang, to the national railway network. This initiative is seen as a strategic extension of the under-construction Sivok-Rangpo railway line, which is slated for completion by 2027.

With Melli acting as a junction, the new line is expected to seamlessly integrate Sikkim’s isolated western areas into the broader transportation grid, enhancing accessibility and economic opportunities for the region.

What the Survey Will Cover

  • The final location survey will provide critical data on:
  • Terrain and topography
  • Feasibility and engineering requirements
  • Environmental and social impacts
  • Cost estimates for full project execution

These insights will guide the project’s detailed design and implementation strategy.

Impact on Regional Development
This new railway line is poised to be a game-changer for Sikkim’s economy, particularly in Gyalshing and nearby areas. The improved connectivity is expected to:

  • Boost tourism, especially to lesser-known destinations
  • Enhance trade by easing the movement of goods
  • Create employment during and after construction
  • Integrate remote communities with the national mainstream

Government’s Commitment to the Northeast
The move reaffirms the central government’s dedication to developing infrastructure in India’s northeastern states, often hampered by geographic isolation. As the Melli-Dentam project progresses, it holds the promise of transforming Sikkim’s mobility landscape and driving sustainable development in the region.
