Flight Operations Set to Resume at Pakyong Airport, Sikkim, from March 31

Recent updates indicate the resumption of flight services at Sikkim’s sole airport located in Pakyong. A senior official familiar with the matter mentioned that flight operations at this airport will recommence on March 31 after a hiatus of six months.

Pakyong airport Director RK Grover disclosed that SpiceJet, a low-cost carrier, will operate two flights—one originating from Kolkata and the other from New Delhi. Grover further elaborated that the airline will conduct daily flights between Kolkata and Pakyong, while the New Delhi-Pakyong route will operate five days a week. These flights will be facilitated by 78-seater aircraft, as per Grover’s statement.

Earlier, flight services at the airport, which boasts a tabletop runway, were suspended due to operational challenges. Grover acknowledged that despite the potential for earlier resumption, ongoing maintenance activities at the airport caused delays. However, he confirmed that the maintenance work has now been completed.

While the airline commenced flight operations at the airport in 2018, services have been inconsistent due to various operational hurdles, including visibility issues. The flight from Kolkata is scheduled to depart at 8.05 AM, reaching Pakyong at 9.35 AM, and departing from there at 10.30 AM to arrive in Kolkata at 12.10 PM. These renewed flight services coincide with the upcoming summer holidays, a period when a significant influx of tourists is anticipated to visit the Himalayan state.
