Indian Railways Eases Boarding Rule: Change Station Up to 30 Minutes Before Departure

Indian Railways has introduced a major passenger-friendly update, allowing travelers to change their boarding station much closer to departure time. The new boarding rule, implemented by Southern Railway, came into effect from April 1, 2026.

Under the revised system, passengers can now modify their boarding station until the preparation of the second or final reservation chart. This is a significant shift from the earlier boarding rule, which required changes to be made at least 24 hours before departure and was reflected only in the first chart.

According to the official release, passengers can now make changes up to 30 minutes before the train departs. The update is aimed at reducing inconvenience and offering greater flexibility in travel planning.

The facility is available through both the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and the IRCTC Rail Connect portal, making it easier for passengers to update their boarding point without hassle.

This move is expected to benefit travelers who may need to adjust their boarding station due to last-minute changes in plans, traffic delays, or logistical issues. Earlier, missing the 24-hour window often resulted in passengers losing the flexibility to make changes.

Railways officials say the update is part of a broader effort to modernize services and improve passenger convenience. With millions of people using the rail network daily, even small improvements like this can significantly enhance the overall travel experience.

The new boarding policy marks another step toward making train travel more adaptable to the changing needs of passengers.
