Russia to Welcome Indian Tourists Visa-Free by 2025?
Here’s What You Need to Know!
Indian travelers dreaming of a trip to Russia may soon find their journey much simpler. By spring 2025, Indian tourists could potentially visit Russia without needing a visa, thanks to an anticipated bilateral agreement. Discussions between Russia and India in June 2024 focused on easing visa requirements, particularly through the introduction of visa-free group tourist exchanges.
Current Visa Requirements for Indian Travelers
Presently, Indian citizens must navigate a stringent visa application process to visit Russia. Depending on the purpose of travel—be it tourism, business, employment, studies, or humanitarian reasons—applicants must secure the appropriate visa type. This process often involves substantial documentation and meticulous planning.
The proposed visa-free initiative could significantly simplify travel for Indian tourists, making the experience more accessible and hassle-free.
Rising Indian Tourism to Russia
Evgeny Kozlov, chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee, shared that during the first half of 2024, around 28,500 Indian tourists visited Moscow—an impressive 1.5-fold increase from the previous year. While most of these travelers visited for business or work-related purposes, the introduction of visa-free travel could boost leisure tourism as well.
Russia has already implemented similar visa-free programs for Chinese and Iranian citizens through a tourism exchange initiative launched on August 1, 2023. The program’s success has encouraged Russia to consider extending similar benefits to Indian passport holders.
Current Travel Options for Indian Citizens
As of August 2023, Indian travelers can apply for a Unified E-Visa (UEV) to enter Russia. This e-visa allows entry for personal, professional, or recreational purposes and typically takes just four days to process.
The UEV system has proven to be a significant step in strengthening tourism ties between India and Russia. The application process is straightforward, requiring Indian nationals to submit their details online via the Russian Embassy or Consulate. Ensuring accuracy in personal details is crucial to avoid delays or rejections.
