Union Budget 2025-26: Major Push for Indian Railways

The Union Budget 2025-26 has marked a significant turning point for Indian Railways, with a record allocation of INR 2,52,000 crore as gross budgetary support. This is the second consecutive year of such substantial funding, underscoring the government’s commitment to upgrading railway infrastructure, ensuring passenger safety, and enhancing travel experiences across the country. Union Railways and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has hailed the budget as “amazing.”

Union Budget 2025-26: 200 New Vande Bharat Trains

200 New Vande Bharat Trains and More
One of the most exciting announcements in the budget is the introduction of 200 new Vande Bharat trains, alongside 100 Amrit Bharat trains and 50 Namo Bharat rapid rail services over the next two to three years. These trains will enhance both the luxury and affordability of rail travel, making it accessible for all sections of society. In addition, the budget also promises 17,500 more general coaches without air conditioning, expanding travel options for budget-conscious passengers.

Boost to Railway Infrastructure and Safety

The government has earmarked INR 4,60,000 crore for railway infrastructure projects, including track upgrades and modernized signaling systems. A major part of the budget, INR 1,16,000 crore, is dedicated to improving railway safety to prevent accidents and ensure safer travel for millions of passengers.

Job Creation and Economic Growth
Mr. Vaishnaw emphasized that these improvements would not only transform the railway system but also generate thousands of jobs. From operational positions to construction-related roles, this influx of investment is expected to provide significant employment opportunities, contributing to India’s economic growth.

Vision for a High-Speed Rail Network and Sustainability

As Indian Railways aims to become the world’s second-largest goods carrier by the end of the current fiscal year, the government also envisions the creation of a 7,000-kilometer high-speed rail network by 2047. Trains on this network could travel at speeds of up to 250 km per hour, revolutionizing logistics and passenger travel.

In line with India’s commitment to sustainability, the government has set an ambitious goal of achieving 100% electrification of the railway network by the end of FY 2025-26. Additionally, the push for small modular reactors for non-fossil energy could position Indian Railways as a global leader in green transportation.

A Bright Future for Indian Railways
With these groundbreaking measures in place, Indian Railways is set for unprecedented growth. From modern trains, enhanced safety, and job creation to green energy initiatives, the government’s vision for the future of rail travel promises a faster, safer, and more accessible travel experience for millions of Indians.
