Goa Government to Issue Warning Circular Regarding Unsafe Tourist Locations

On Thursday, Goa’s Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte emphasized the necessity for tourists and locals alike to exercise caution when visiting unsafe Tourist Locations within the coastal state. He expressed concern over individuals often venturing into perilous spots, influenced by content shared by social media influencers, without adequately assessing associated risks.

Khaunte highlighted instances where individuals, inspired by videos shared by Instagram influencers, engaged recklessly in activities such as swimming in abandoned quarries filled with water. Regrettably, such ventures have resulted in fatalities due to a lack of awareness about the inherent dangers present in these environments.

In response, Khaunte announced that the tourism department would soon release a comprehensive circular aimed at raising awareness among tourists and locals. This initiative seeks to educate individuals on the importance of conducting thorough safety assessments before embarking on adventures, especially in potentially hazardous locations.

Despite appeals from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant urging the public to refrain from swimming in deep waters, incidents of drowning persist in the coastal state. To address this issue, district collectors in both North Goa and South Goa recently issued directives prohibiting swimming activities in various water bodies, including waterfalls, abandoned quarries, and rivers, ahead of the impending monsoon season. Reports indicate that the ban on swimming in these water bodies will remain in effect until further notice.

These circulars, issued by district administrations, serve as stern reminders of the potential dangers associated with swimming in these areas. They also highlight the legal ramifications of disregarding such directives, citing Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to disobedience posing threats to human life, health, or safety.

The efforts led by the Tourism Minister and district authorities aim to mitigate risks associated with irresponsible recreational activities in Goa’s natural landscapes. By promoting a culture of safety awareness and compliance, stakeholders endeavor to safeguard the well-being of both residents and visitors, ensuring a more enjoyable and secure tourism experience in the coastal paradise of Goa.
