“Gujarat Names ‘Ghol’ State Fish – Valuable!”

During the Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 in Ahmedabad, Chief Minister officially declared the Ghol fish as the state fish of Gujarat, emphasizing its vital role in the marine ecosystems of both Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Known for its considerable size and distinctive golden-brown hue, the Ghol fish has become a focal point in the region’s fisheries industry over time.

Interestingly, the Ghol fish holds high value for both its meat and air bladder. The air bladder, in particular, finds applications in pharmaceuticals, while the meat contributes to the production of beer and wine.

The separation of these two valuable components allows for unique marketing strategies. The sought-after air bladder, often exported from Mumbai, has added to the fish’s economic significance.

The demand for the Ghol fish, especially its prized air bladder, has elevated its prominence in the region’s fisheries industry. Its impressive size, averaging around one-and-a-half meters, directly correlates with its market value, reaching remarkable rates of up to INR 5 lakh per unit length. This economic potential creates a lucrative opportunity for skilled fishermen, enabling them to earn substantial annual incomes, sometimes amounting to millions.

Central Minister Parsottam Rupala highlighted during the conference that Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh had previously designated their respective state fish through initiatives led by the Fisheries Department. Gujarat’s decision to declare the Ghol fish as the state fish not only acknowledges its ecological importance but also underscores its significant contributions to the thriving fisheries sector.

The declaration of the Ghol fish as Gujarat’s state fish symbolizes not only its ecological significance but also recognizes its substantial economic impact on the region’s fisheries industry. The unique characteristics and economic potential of the Ghol fish position it as a key player in the marine landscape of Gujarat and Maharashtra, solidifying its status as a proud state emblem.
