Junagarh fort in Bikaner – Lesser know aspects of Rajasthan

Discover the hidden tales behind the majestic Junagarh Fort rising proudly amidst Bikaner’s arid landscapes in the Indian state of Rajasthan. While the grandeur of the fort is widely acknowledged, there are intriguing lesser-known facts that add depth to its narrative. Embark on a journey to explore the concealed facets of Junagarh Fort.

Architectural Uniqueness of Junagarh Fort

Set apart from the more renowned forts in Rajasthan, It distinguishes itself with a unique feature—it stands on the plain grounds of Bikaner rather than on a hill. The absence of elevated terrain contributes to the fort’s distinctive charm.

Name Origins

Unlike many Indian forts, Junagarh Fort doesn’t derive its name from a ruling monarch. Translating to “Old Fort” in the local language, the fort was initially named Chintamani and later rechristened Junagarh during the reign of its founder, Raja Rai Singh.

It is famed for its elaborate network of seven gates guarding its entrances. Each gate, adorned with splendid architecture, symbolizes a specific victory or virtue. From Karan Pol to Suraj Pol and Daulat Pol, each gate narrates a tale of valor and triumph.
