Kashmir Anticipates Inaugural Direct Train Connection from Jammu

A significant milestone is on the horizon for the Indian Railways as the Udhampur-Baramulla rail link project nears completion, heralding the prospect of Kashmir’s first direct train service from Jammu. The project, spanning 272 km, aims to seamlessly integrate the Kashmir Valley into the national rail network.

With over 95 percent of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project (USBRL) already accomplished, the swift progress promises enhanced connectivity for the region. Once operational, the direct train service will significantly reduce the travel time between Srinagar and Jammu from six hours to just 3.5 hours, offering substantial relief to commuters.

Moreover, there are indications that the government is contemplating the introduction of the Vande Bharat Metro train service between Jammu and Srinagar. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has outlined plans for a Vande Bharat Express train maintenance facility in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district, signaling the potential launch of the Vande Bharat Metro upon the completion of the rail network.

The USBRL project, stretching 119 km, encompasses 38 tunnels, including India’s longest transportation tunnel, T-49, measuring 12.75 km. The initiative also features 927 bridges, with the iconic Chenab Bridge standing out as the world’s highest steel arch rail bridge at 359 meters above the Chenab River.

In a concerted effort to enhance connectivity, the Indian Railways envisions introducing three additional Vande Bharat Express trains dedicated to Jammu and Kashmir during the fiscal year 2023-24, although the specific launch date remains undisclosed. Initial utilization of existing stations is planned, with the potential for establishing more stations based on demand.

Currently, Jammu and Kashmir boasts over 36 railway stations, including significant ones in Baramulla, Sopore, Hamre, among others, contributing to the robust expansion of the region’s rail infrastructure.
