Rajasthan Government Plans to Introduce Smart Card for Tourist Sites

The Rajasthan government is in the process of developing a system that will allow tourists to access multiple monuments and transportation services using a single smart card. The Department of Information Technology will create a dedicated portal for this initiative, with the Tourism Department as the nodal agency and the Transport Department also involved.

According to an official from the Tourism Department, initially, tourists will be able to visit multiple monuments using a rechargeable smart card. A portal will be developed to facilitate this process, enabling tourists to conveniently visit monuments without purchasing individual tickets. The single smart card will be valid for government-protected monuments throughout the state, and integration with road transport services will also be implemented.

Initial Phase

During the initial phase, the service will include only super luxury buses for intrastate travel. The smart cards’ validity will be designed to assist with crowd management at monuments.

The Rajasthan government official further explained that depending on the system’s response, the service will be expanded to include private museums and monuments. This comprehensive approach will eliminate the need to wait in ticket queues, saving time and resources. Furthermore, the system’s scope has the potential to integrate other tourist services, such as accommodations in Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) hotels, private hotels and resorts, and cab services, following successful implementation on a smaller scale.

Gajendra Singh, a tourist guide based in Udaipur, expressed that purchasing tickets has become time-consuming, especially during peak seasons. He believes that the proposed system will greatly benefit travelers and have a positive impact on the state’s tourism industry.

Tourism is a vital sector in Rajasthan, with 1087.5 lakh tourists visiting the state in 2022. In addition to forts and palaces, Rajasthan’s wildlife, lakes, and religious sites attract a significant number of tourists from various countries, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Australia.
