EU Introduces New Schengen Visa Rules for Indian Nationals

The European Union has announced a new visa scheme, termed ‘cascade,’ aimed at Indian citizens residing in India who apply for Schengen visas. This scheme enables Indian travelers to obtain multiple-entry visas with extended validity, reflecting the EU’s commitment to enhancing ties with India and fostering tourism and business exchanges.

Adopted by the European Commission on April 18, this initiative diverges from the conventional Visa Code rules that previously governed Indian nationals’ visa applications. The new regulations offer more favorable conditions for acquiring multiple-entry visas, facilitating easier access for individuals with a documented travel history, provided their passport permits it.

Under the recently implemented visa “cascade” regime, Indian nationals can secure long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas with prolonged validity. To qualify for a two-year visa, applicants must have lawfully utilized two visas within the preceding three years. Subsequently, subject to their passport’s remaining validity, they may be eligible for a five-year visa.

Importantly, Schengen visas are not restricted to a specific purpose, allowing holders to utilize them for tourism, business, or visiting relatives and friends. However, they do not confer the right to work within the Schengen area.

This visa arrangement streamlines travel across Europe, as travelers only require one visa to visit multiple Schengen area countries, eliminating the need for separate visas for each destination.
