India Targets 15% Faster Domestic Tourism Growth by 2029
The BOTT Knowledge Conclave: Tourism@2025 recently held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, showcased India’s ambitious plans for the tourism sector. Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, outlined a visionary roadmap for boosting domestic tourism, projecting a growth rate 15% higher than the country’s overall economic growth by 2029.
Key Highlights from the Conclave
Exponential Growth in Domestic Tourism
Minister Shekhawat highlighted India’s impressive strides in the tourism sector, which has seen a 95.64% increase in domestic tourist numbers. This surge underscores the nation’s growing appeal as a travel destination. Notably, India’s ranking on the Global Travel and Tourism Development Index has climbed from 65th to 39th, reflecting the sector’s rising global prominence.
Strategic Investments in Domestic Tourism
To enhance India’s tourism offerings, over ₹6,800 crore has already been invested in destination development, while an additional ₹3,295.76 crore has been allocated to promote lesser-known sites across various states. These efforts aim to balance the focus between popular attractions and hidden gems, broadening the appeal of Indian tourism.
Modernizing Tourism Infrastructure
Mr. Shekhawat emphasized the role of technology and infrastructure in driving growth. Initiatives like the e-tourist visa have simplified travel, boosting inbound tourism and enhancing the visitor experience. The minister also stressed the need for continued infrastructure development to meet global standards, ensuring India remains competitive in the global tourism landscape.
Emerging Tourism Trends
The minister noted a significant shift toward experiential tourism, which prioritizes personalized and immersive experiences for travelers. Segments like MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) and medical tourism are also gaining traction, further diversifying India’s tourism portfolio.
A Whole-of-Government Approach
Minister Shekhawat credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Whole of Government” approach for transforming the tourism sector. By integrating development with heritage preservation, this strategy has fostered a more inclusive and sustainable tourism ecosystem. “Tourism connects cultures and bridges nations,” Mr. Shekhawat remarked, emphasizing the role of tourism as a cultural and economic catalyst.
Maha Kumbh and Future Aspirations
The conclave reaffirmed India’s readiness to welcome 45 crore visitors for the Maha Kumbh, underlining the importance of collaborative efforts to make tourism a cornerstone of the Indian economy.
