BRO Unveils New Route to Ladakh: Third Shortcut from Manali to Leh
In a significant stride, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has reached a milestone with the completion of a 298 km road connecting Nimmu, Padam, and Darcha in Ladakh. This development, amidst ongoing border tensions, marks the establishment of a third crucial axis to the region, alongside the existing routes from Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh.
This newly inaugurated road stands as a lifeline for Ladakh, providing vital connectivity, especially in challenging circumstances. It fortifies defense readiness along the northern borders and catalyzes economic growth in the Zanskar valley, effectively addressing both security and developmental needs.
Compared to other routes, this road offers a shorter and more efficient pathway, with only one pass, Shinkun La, positioned at an altitude of 16,558 ft. The commencement of tunnel construction at Shinkun La underscores the commitment to establishing all-weather connectivity to Ladakh.
Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, Director General of Border Roads, commended the determination and dedication of BRO personnel, who toiled relentlessly, even in adverse weather conditions, to complete the connectivity project. Despite encountering challenges like frozen river crossings and rugged terrain, the BRO successfully fulfilled its mission, showcasing expertise and resolve.
The completion of the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road holds particular significance as it ensures year-round access to Ladakh, reducing dependence on aerial routes during winters when the Manali-Leh highway remains closed. This improved connectivity will facilitate not only the movement of defense personnel and supplies but also boost trade and tourism, benefiting local communities.
The strategic importance of Ladakh is undeniable, given its proximity to contested borders with Pakistan, Afghanistan, and China. Key areas like Kargil, Siachen, and Daulat Beg Oldi underscore the region’s significance in national security deliberations.
Amid escalating tensions and substantial military deployments along the border since the 2020 standoff, critical infrastructure projects like the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road assume even greater importance. Roads play a pivotal role in providing logistical support and troop mobility, bolstering India’s defense posture in the region.
