Sikkim’s Sanglaphu Lake Welcomes Visitors!

Exciting news emanates from Sikkim as Sanglaphu Lake in the Mangan district opens its gates to the public for the very first time in history! Formerly inaccessible to tourists, this high-altitude lake, known locally as Sanglaphu Cho, sits majestically at an awe-inspiring altitude of 5080m (16,670ft), approximately 5 km from Yumesamdong, also known as Zero Point, near Lachung.

Sanglaphu Lake Welcomes Visitors

Regarded as the “Great Lake,” Sanglaphu Cho holds profound religious significance, attracting locals who seek blessings and offer prayers amidst its pristine surroundings of snow-capped peaks and unspoiled wilderness.

The inauguration of the lake was a momentous occasion! Monks from the Samten Choling Monastery in Lachung conducted a ceremonial prayer to commemorate the historic event. Distinguished members of the Lachung dzomsa, along with representatives from the hotel association and cab drivers, graced the occasion with their presence.

However, before embarking on your journey, it’s imperative to adhere to certain guidelines to preserve the sanctity of the lake and its surrounding environment. Visitors are urged to avoid bringing single-use plastic items, including tetra packs, to the area. Currently, access to the lake is recommended only via four-wheel-drive vehicles, with plans for expanded accessibility as snow gradually recedes. Furthermore, spitting in the vicinity of the lake and its surroundings is strictly prohibited.

Nestled in the northeastern region of Sikkim, Sanglaphu is not only a natural marvel but also holds immense religious significance. Gurudongmar Lake, situated at a staggering altitude of 5425m (17,800ft), serves as a crucial source of the Lachen stream, which feeds into the Teesta River.

As Sikkim continues to unveil its natural treasures to the world, responsible tourism and cultural preservation take precedence. For those embarking on the journey to Sanglaphu Lake, an enchanting experience awaits. The road leading to Sanglaphu Lake promises an adventure in itself, with rugged terrain and breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas guiding the way.

Surrounded by the majestic beauty of the Himalayas, visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the embrace of nature and behold the awe-inspiring magnificence of one of Sikkim’s most revered treasures.
