Sirpur Moves Closer to UNESCO World Heritage Nomination After ASI–SADA Joint Review

The historic town of Sirpur in Chhattisgarh has taken a significant step toward becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site after a joint inspection by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Raipur Circle, and the Sirpur Special Area Development Authority (SADA).

The inspection, held on November 8, focused on assessing and reorganising 34 major heritage sites spread across the ancient town. Officials confirmed that these monuments will be grouped into four thematic clusters to ensure better conservation, visitor management, and long-term preservation. The clusters will also help streamline tourism development in the region.

Key sites included in the evaluation are the iconic Laxman Temple, Baleswar Temple, the ancient Marketplace, as well as major Buddhist sites such as Tivar Dev Monastery and Anand Prabhu Monastery. These structures highlight Sirpur’s rich cultural heritage and its importance as a major centre for Hindu and Buddhist traditions between the 5th and 8th centuries.

To strengthen the nomination proposal, authorities are planning a series of infrastructural and visitor-friendly upgrades. These include rest shelters, drinking water points, sanitation facilities, improved walkways, interpretive signage, and battery-operated vehicles to enhance mobility within the heritage zone. Accessibility measures such as tactile paths, Braille signage, and sign-language interpretation videos are also being considered.

In a bid to promote sustainable tourism, the development plan emphasises community participation. Local residents are likely to benefit from guide certification programmes, skill development, and employment opportunities related to tourism and cultural activities. Officials are also exploring ways to host cultural fairs, exhibitions, and heritage-based events throughout the year to boost local engagement.

The introduction of AR/VR experiences for tourists is another key element of the proposal, aimed at offering immersive storytelling and enhancing visitor understanding of Sirpur’s historical layers.

Officials believe the coordinated efforts of ASI and SADA could significantly strengthen Sirpur’s chances of receiving UNESCO World Heritage status. If successful, the recognition would bring global attention to Chhattisgarh’s cultural landscape and contribute to the region’s economic and tourism growth.

With inspection completed and plans underway, Sirpur is now positioned to advance further in the UNESCO nomination process, marking a major milestone in the state’s heritage conservation efforts.
